About Us

The Museum of the Southwest's site includes an Art Museum, Children's Museum, Planetarium and Grounds containing outdoor sculptures.

The Art Museum features several galleries. The Wagner Wing, which features exhibits from the Museum's collections and/or traveling exhibits. The Here and Now Gallery is our contemporary exhibit space featuring six "one person" shows throughout the year. The Hogan Gallery and Sculpture Gallery features work from the Museum's collections. The Turner/Thomas Galleries features shows of community interest. The Grounds of the Museum feature a permanent installation of sculpture from the Museum's collection including works by Glenna Goodacre, Allan Houser, Doug Hyde, Tom Knapp, Dan Ostermiller, Rosie Sandifer, Peter Woytuk and others.

The Children's Museum features five permanent exhibitions: "My Town", a two-story interactive playscape featuring a child-sized Bank, Grocery Store, Health Clinic, Dress-up Attic, Victorian House, Magic Shop, restaurant, Television Studio and Construction Site. "Beach Babies Tot Spot" an interactive environment for children age 3 and under features soft construction manipulative designed to encourage gross motor skill development; "West Texas Keys" - fresh water and saltwater aquariums featuring exotic fish and living coral, along with a please touch tank filled with starfish, crabs, shrimp and other sea creatures; "Sound Wall" - interactive wall sculpture that creates sounds when touched, and allows participants to compose music while exploring the phenomena of sound. The Children's Museum also maintains two galleries for temporary exhibitions.

The Planetarium is in the process of renovation and expansion. When completed in approximately 15 months, the renovated Planetarium and new education classroom will feature the latest, state-of-the-art technology including the new Spitz projection system in the theater. We will also have the capability to partner with other cultural and educational organizations to offer a variety of programming from nature and history to music and perfomance based arts. Our Planetarium renovation is bringing the Marian Blakemore into the forefront of astronomic science and "edu-tainment" of the broadest nature.

The renovations and upgrades will include:

  • State of the art projection system
  • Updated dome
  • Classroom space with capabilities for distance learning in association with The University of Texas McDonald Observatory
  • Expanded seating.
