A collaboration with the Midland Independent School District, the annual Student Art Exhibition celebrates the talents of Midland and other area school’s youngest artists and their teachers. Elementary through high school students are represented through a variety of media including drawing, painting and sculpture. This exhibition is juried by local guest artists with ribbons awarded to the top ranking students.

The Museum of the Southwest’s 2015 Student Art Exhibition will focus on the theme “Time Warp.” Students may interpret this theme in any way they see fit.

Examples of this theme include, but are not limited to:
• What do you think earth will look like in the future?
• Create a portrait of someone who lives in the year 3000
• What inventions/technology will we have in the future?
• What historical figure of the past inspires you?
• How would you illustrate a historical event?
• Create your own dinosaur

There are two ways to be a part of the 2015 Student Art Exhibition:

1. The Gallery Exhibition
Any student in grade seven through twelve is eligible to submit work for the gallery exhibition. See eligibility details below:
• Grades seven through twelve are invited to submit work for the gallery show
• Submissions must be dropped off at the Museum of the Southwest before January 23, 2015
• One entry per student
• Entries may be in the form of two or three-dimensional works of art. A black or white mat is required and no works may be framed.
• Entries should be submitted by the student’s fine arts or homeroom teacher with this submission form.
• There is no limit on the number of students a teacher may enter into the exhibition

2. The Digital Exhibition
Due to space limitations in the Museum’s physical galleries, any student in kindergarten through twelfth grade is invited to upload their artwork to a “digital exhibition” which will be featured in the exhibition’s gallery guide and on the Museum’s website. All entries will be approved by Museum staff before they will be officially posted. See eligibility details below:
• Artwork must fit within the current exhibition theme of “Time Warp”
• Artwork images should be clear and not pixelated
• A tag or comment including the student’s name, teacher’s name, material used and title of the artwork should be included
• Artwork submissions for the digital exhibitions can be made until April 4, 2015
• The Museum has the right to deny any works of art that it feels does not meet the given criteria

To submit artwork for the digital exhibition, UPLOAD ARTWORK ON OUR FACEBOOK (In description please include student name, title of work, school, grade level and teacher name).

A panel of jurors will make the final selections for the gallery exhibition. Works will be selected on the basis of quality, originality and the artist’s use of the theme. An artist’s statement can be included with the application to allow jurors to more fully understand the work of art and its place within the theme. Artist statements are not required. Teachers of selected students will be notified via mail by February 2, 2015.

What is an artist statement?
An artist statement is a paragraph written by the artist that describes his or her artwork. It might include details about the inspiration for the artwork or the reason that it fits within the given exhibition theme. It may include why the artist enjoys art or their goals as an artist. The artist’s statement is not required, but will allow jurors a better understanding of the artist’s intent. Please keep statements under 100 words.

Will Student’s Get Their Artwork Back?
Yes! Artwork will be available for pick-up beginning Tuesday, April 7, 2015. All artwork not picked up by a school representative or parent/guardian by Friday, April 24, 2015 will become property of the Museum of the Southwest.
