Always Near Me, 2015

Bronze

Sculpture commissioned in Memory of Melissa Eastham.

Always Near Me is a memorial sculpture. A memorial is an object that serves as a focus for the memory of something, usually a deceased person or a tragic event in history.  Sometimes a memorial sculpture is of the person themselves and other times the artist may use symbolism to represent a special bond or memory.

Symbolism is the practice or art of using an object or a word to represent an abstract idea. An action, person, place, word, or object can all have a symbolic meaning.

Questions to consider when visiting Judith Stewart's Always Near Me:

  • What are some examples of symbolism that you come across in your life?

  • What can different animals symbolize? (a lion might symbolize courage and a bear strength)

  • What can different colors symbolize? (red might symbolize anger and blue might symbolize sadness)

Explore how color can be used as symbolism with Dr. Seuss's My Many Colored Days and how animals can be used as symbolism with Quick as a Cricket by Audrey Wood.
