Discovery Trunks

Become detectives as you explore items that belonged to the people and places featured in our portrait and landscape galleries.  Draw inferences from the clues and see if you can figure out which trunk belongs to which work of art. ​

PLANETARIUM DOME

Bella Gaia (Beautiful Earth)

Bella Gaia tells the story of our planet Earth through art, science, and music. Enhanced with comments from astronauts from around the world, Bella Gaia illuminates the beauty of our planet and the interconnectedness of all things on Earth.

SCIENCE ON A SPHERE

3D Ocean Currents + Temperatures

40 minutes  |  Ages 8+

How does the ocean move? Investigate the patterns in the ocean's currents and use color theory to explore the ocean temperatures. Then use the power of 3D technology to bring those currents to life!

FOURTH GRADE TOURS PROGRAM

Each October the Museum of the Southwest tours every fourth grader in the Midland Independent School District, free of charge. The tours visit three parts of the Museum's campus and design all three experiences around a central, cross-curricular theme. Information is emailed to principals and teachers at the beginning of each school year and schedules are provided by MISD. For more information or questions, please contact us.

Grant for 4th grade tours provided by the Permian Basin Area Foundation.

BOOKING A TOUR

  1. Review the tour options listed above.

  2. Submit a tour request online.

  3. After your tour request has been submitted, a member of the education team will contact you to discuss details and availability and to answer any questions you may have.

  4. When your tour date and options have been confirmed by our education team, you will receive an email confirmation with your invoice and tour information.

TOURS AND GROUP RATES

Tours and group rates are available upon request. We request that your group consist of at least 10 people and no more than 50 people in one area; exceptions to these requirements may be made upon approval of request.  Tours book up quickly for the year, so please plan ahead.  If you have special requests, please let us know at the time of your booking.  Specialized tours require a booking at least one month in advance.

We have an exciting selection of tour options that can be customized for your group.  When booking a tour, please let us know what options you are interested in as well as dates and times.  Most tour options run in 30 to 40 minute sessions.  Sessions can be booked as a single session or multiple sessions can be booked for the same day depending on group size, time frame, and staff availability. 

** Tours cannot be booked in the months of October and February in order to accommodate our 4th grade tour program.

PAYMENT

Tour prices are $2 per child for one venue plus $1 for added venues, therefore a trip to the Turner Memorial Art Museum and Blakemore Planetarium would total $3 per child. We ask for a minimum number of students and that one adult chaperone is provided per 10 children. Adult chaperones and teachers are free of charge. Payment is expected upon arrival unless otherwise prearranged. Payment should be gathered before arriving and presented as one payment; this makes it easier to process your group into the Museum in a timely manner. Payment can be made in cash, check or credit card, please make checks out to: The Museum of the Southwest. If you need a receipt please let visitor services know and one will be provided for you.
