Questions to consider when visiting Rosie Sandifer’s sculpture Freedom of Youth:

  • Who is the person in this sculpture?  How would you describe her?

  • How has the artist used line to move your eye around the sculpture?

  • The title of this sculpture is Freedom of Youth.  Does the girl in this sculpture look free?  Why or why not?

  • What is the girl doing in this sculpture?  Where would she be doing this if she existed in real life?

  • Is this sculpture realistic?  Is there anything that you have to use your imagination with in this sculpture?

A native of Lubbock, Texas, Rosie Sandifer studied art at Southwestern State University in Oklahoma and Texas Tech University in Lubbock. She is known for her realistic figurative sculptures, particularly children. Sandifer has said of her work, “I feel that sculpture should be taken off the pedestals it was displayed on in the past.  Introducing art on a human scale into the immediate environment of adults and children creates an aesthetic experience that can have a lasting impact.”
