BILLY KEEN: VISIONS OF SANTA
On View This Holiday Season
What began as a simple demonstration of an Old Master painting technique has grown into a beloved annual tradition. In 1974, native Texan artist Billy L. Keen was showing a co-worker how underpainting could achieve realistic flesh tones. Because it was the Christmas season, he chose Santa Claus as his subject. That first painting was hung in the room of his one-year-old son, and the following year he created another Santa for his second son. By the third year, it felt like “a neat thing to do”—and thus a tradition was born. Every year since, Keen has painted a new portrait of Santa Claus, each one unique and full of character.
This holiday season, the Museum of the Southwest is delighted to present Visions of Santa, featuring the complete collection of Keen’s portraits created over the past five decades. Visitors are invited to experience the charm, warmth, and evolving artistry of a tradition that celebrates both family and the spirit of Christmas.
