ABOUT

J.C. Spock’s Southwest Series is a richly layered collection of mixed media works that captures the nostalgia, history, and rugged beauty of the American Southwest. Drawing inspiration from desert landscapes, adobe architecture, open roads, and the fading remnants of Western Americana, each piece blends photography, acrylic paint, inks, pastels, and authentic vintage ephemera to create works that feel both contemporary and timeless.

The images in this show depict scenes from the American West – cowboys and cowgirls, ranch life, rural communities and landscapes that feel timeless. They ask us to look into the past but they also ask us to consider why certain stories, places and images still resonate with us today.

Spock’s work falls into two main series: in one she use my own photographs that she has taken throughout the West; in the other she works with black and white vintage photos she sourced from libraries, archives and historical societies, and the pieces in The West Reimagined fall into that second series.

In the artist’s words “I love about vintage Western imagery is how remarkably timeless it feels because a photograph of a cowboy taken a century ago can look strikingly similar to one taken today. Sure, the hats might be shaped differently but the essential rhythms of ranching, farming, horsemanship and rural life remain surprisingly familiar."
